Assessment of Future UW QB Nick Montana
Watched Nick Montana of Oaks Christian take on Skyline here in Seattle last night. Good game, back and fourth but way too many turnovers involved.
I was impressed with Nick Montana as a QB in several ways.
1) Good pocket presence, felt pressure and was able to step up and deliver the ball as needed.
2) Can take a hit, Nick's offensive line, which consists of future Husky Erik Kohler, didn't give Nick a whole lot of time but on several plays Nick stood in there, got the ball off under pressure and delivered an accurate pass. He's tougher than I expected.
3) Passes well on the run, Once Nick was outside of the pocket he did a good job throwing with his body on target. One play specifically he was able to put the ball down field on the run for about 30 yards. He lacks the arm strength to be able to throw away from the target on the run but that will come.
4) Leadership, he team respects him and I think he's a smart kid.
5) Works well in a system now that is similar to the way I think the UW will use him so not a lot of adjustments to be made in terms of style.
Now, Nick is skinny but he has the frame to put 25 pounds on since he is 6'3". With a year red shirting and potentially another as a back up he should be ready to go in three years time.
